Novices are a certain brand of annoying people you meet. They have been described succintly as "weird and boring". Novices are the sort of people who put on an insane façade to make themselves seem interesting, but who don't have anything meaningful or original to say.
Novices are usually interested in SpongeBob SquarePants, Donnie Darko, clinical depression, cheese and both bad and good music. The best way to find a novice is to hang around Dublin's Temple Bar and the best way to get a drink out of them is to stick your hand down their throat.
Novices are closer to enlightenment than norms. They have caught a whiff of insanity, which, though they have not understood it, is better than being unaware of insanity. Most Ultimate Comment adherents were novices at one stage or another.
